Chromatic Harmony Extended Chords - Advanced Secondary Dominants & Extended Diatonic Chords

Regular price $59.00

Stuck playing the same chord progressions over and over?

This course breaks you out of basic triadic harmony and into the rich world of chord extensions mixed with chromatic harmony. You'll learn to harmonize any diatonic melody with sophisticated chromatic harmony chord progressions that actually make sense.

Bonus Lesson Example Vid:

What You'll Master

The course covers altered dominants, extended diatonic chords, extension theory using a "proximity method" for simplicity, and why dominant chords, even highly altered, are so versatile they work almost anywhere with strong root movement.

You'll discover that extended chords actually make harmonization of diatonic melodies(re-harmonizations) easier. When you know how to build ninths, elevenths, and thirteenths properly, you have way more options for fitting melody notes into your progressions.

Course Structure

Seven focused video lessons walk you through practical examples you can use immediately.  Each episode builds on the previous one, starting with one secondary dominant with highly altered version of it, you progress to cumulative stacking of more altered secondary dominants.

The lessons include over 30 musical examples covering everything from simple turnarounds to highly chromatic progressions. Most examples harmonize diatonic tones, so you'll learn to reharmonize existing melodies with sophisticated chord changes.

Key Techniques Covered

  • Extended/Altered Secondary dominants in all positions
  • A proximity method for understanding extensions quickly
  • Strong vs. weak root movement and when to use each
  • Altered dominant chords that resolve beautifully
  • Why tendency tone rules don't apply as well in extended chord chromatic harmony
  • Various tips on common uses

Prerequisites

You should be comfortable with basic seventh chords and completely understand Basic Chromatic Harmony. It is highly recommended to have “some” experience with chord extensions and the concepts of “add”. Often these terms are interchangeable as add2 can also be add9 etc. Make sure you have a basic extended chord understanding! It is also highly recommended to have a solid foundation in strong vs weak root movement such as you will find in Basic Functional Harmony.

This course provides tools so you can create your own progressions and solve harmonization problems independently.
