You can memorize every jazz substitution and modal interchange trick in the book. But without solid timing development, those chords won't gel.
Here's what most composers miss: timing isn't just about keeping a beat. It's about knowing when chords should change and how long they should breathe.
Start with notation as your visual guide. When you see chord changes mapped out on paper, timing patterns become obvious. You'll spot the rhythm of harmonic movement.
From the video try this exercise: Take a song you love and write out just the basic triads. Count how long each chord lasts. Notice how much space exists between changes.
That space is where the magic happens. Master the timing of that space, and your compositions will finally breathe.
